Raising Funds for Newborn Equipment: Help Kaunas Hospital Provide Lifesaving Care

The Hospital of Lithuanian University of Health Sciences Kauno Klinikos is seeking support to raise funds for essential equipment for newborn care. With an increasing number of premature infants in need of treatment, the hospital requires additional resources to ensure the health and survival of these fragile patients.

Each year, Kaunas Hospital treats about 500 premature neonates, with approximately 400 requiring intensive care in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU).

The incubators in these units are vital for maintaining a stable environment conducive to infants’ growth and development. However, the cost of a single incubator, like the Dual Incu i, is substantial, reaching 38,000 euros. This financial barrier makes it challenging for the hospital to purchase new equipment.

Prof. Dr. Rasa Tamelienė, Head of the Department of Neonatology at Kaunas Hospital emphasizes the importance of this fundraising initiative:

“The smallest babies are born and treated here, and they require specialized equipment for survival. Every baby in the NICU needs an incubator for their wellbeing. Premature and ill newborns face numerous health challenges, including underdeveloped organs, low birth weight and difficulty maintaining stable temperature. Incubators play a significant role by regulating body temperature, providing necessary humidity to prevent skin breakdown and maintain proper respiratory health, protecting infants against infections and observing their vital signs. Incubators provide a controlled environment that minimizes noise and light exposure, creating a calm and supportive setting for the infant’s development and recovery. Inability to ensure optimal temperature and humidity of the environment later can lead to higher morbidity and even mortality of the neonates due to hypothermia, electrolyte imbalances and infections. Despite their importance, our hospital faces a shortage of incubators. We need Your support to continue providing high-quality care to our newborn patients.”

This fundraising campaign is aimed at raising the necessary funds to purchase a new Dual Incu i incubator, which can function as both an incubator and an infant warmer. Its advanced features make it an ideal solution for NICU, ensuring a stable and controlled environment for premature infants.

The director of Fenix Charity Fund, Santa Laizane, says:

“We’re excited to launch this fundraising campaign to support Kaunas Hospital. The cost of this essential equipment is high, but with community support, we can make a significant difference in the lives of these newborns as every neonate deserves a fighting chance at life. With your help, we can ensure that even the most vulnerable infants receive the care they need to survive and thrive. Please join us in this life-saving mission by donating and spreading the word. Together, we can create a change”.

Kaunas Hospital is the largest healthcare institution in Lithuania, providing a wide range of medical services to patients nationwide and beyond. Despite its size and resources, there is a pressing need for additional equipment to meet the demands of its neonatal units. This press release aims to raise awareness about this crucial initiative and encourage community members, businesses, and other organizations to contribute to the cause.
