The Republican Šiauliai Hospital has received a new Medin-NC3 respiratory support device that will be used in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) for premature and sick newborns. This vital addition ensures improved respiratory therapy, helping infants with lung development and recovery. This project was made possible through the dedicated efforts of the Fenix Charity Fund, the generosity of individual donors, and the significant financial contribution from Walletto.

The Republican Šiauliai Hospital is in need of an advanced respiratory support device to enhance the survival and growth of its smallest patients. As the hospital treats a significant number of premature infants annually, the demand for non-invasive respiratory support systems in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) is critical. The high cost of these devices makes it challenging for the hospital to purchase additional units without external support.

Vaida Aleksandravičienė, coordinator of the neonatal intensive care unit explains, “Approximately 1,600 newborns are born in the Republic Hospital of Šiauliai per year, about 5.5% (about 100 newborns) of them are premature babies. There are 3 intensive care units in the NEONATAL department, where about 20% of newborns are admitted – these are premature and sick newborns who need treatment and intensive care. About 2% of young patients require non-invasive respiratory therapy (nCPAP) per year. Therefore, the new device would update the available medical equipment and facilitate the recovery of small patients, shortening the treatment period. The new machine would help support or facilitate the breathing of a sick and/or premature newborn.”

To address this urgent need, we are calling on the community to help fund a new Medin-NC3 device, which provides essential non-invasive respiratory support for these vulnerable infants.

The Medin-NC3 is a new generation of non-invasive respiratory support that creates a stable environment for the growth and development of premature infants, crucial for their survival. This device offers advanced features including optimal airflow, precise oxygen level regulation, and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) to support proper lung development and overall growth. Its state-of-the-art technology ensures superior performance, meeting all the requirements for neonatal care.

Republican Šiauliai Hospital is the largest healthcare institution in Northern Lithuania, celebrating its 180th anniversary. Initially established with just 20 beds, it has grown significantly to become the largest employer in Šiauliai, with 2025 physicians and 2399 nurses. The hospital provides high-quality healthcare services to a vast number of patients, offering a wide range of medical services from primary healthcare and emergency services to specialized surgeries and advanced treatments. Despite its extensive resources, the hospital requires additional support to meet the demands of its neonatal units, making community contributions vital.
